Bad day at the office...

This is even funnier when you realize it's real! Next time you have a bad day at work, think of this guy. Bob is a commercial saturation diver for Global Divers in Louisiana. He performs underwater repairs on offshore drilling rigs.

Below is an E-mail he sent to his sister. She then sent it to radio station 103.2 on FM dial in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, who was sponsoring a worst job experience contest. Needless to say, she won.

Hi Sue,

Just another note from your bottom-dwelling brother. Last week I had a bad day at the office. I know you've been feeling down lately at work, so I thought I would share my dilemma with you to make you realize it's not so bad after all.

Before I can tell you what happened to me, I first must bore you with a few technicalities of my job. As you know, my "office" lies at the bottom of the sea. I wear a suit to the office. It's a wetsuit. This time of year the water is quite cool. So what we do to keep warm is this: We have a diesel powered industrial water heater.

This $20,000 piece of equipment sucks the water out of the sea. It heats it to a delightful temperature. It then pumps it down to the diver through a garden hose, which is taped to the air hose. Now this sounds like a darn good plan, and I've used it several times with no complaints. What I do, when I get to the bottom and start working, is take the hose and stuff it down the back of my wetsuit. This floods my whole suit with warm water. It's like working in a Jacuzzi.

Everything was going well until all of a sudden, my butt started to itch. So, of course, I scratched it. This only made things worse. Within a few seconds my butt started to burn. I pulled the hose out from my back, but the damage was done. In agony I realized what had happened. The hot water machine had sucked up a jellyfish and pumped it into my suit.

Now, since I don't have any hair on my back, the jellyfish couldn't stick to it. However, the crack of my butt was not as fortunate. When I scratched what I thought was an itch, I was actually grinding the jellyfish into the crack of my butt.

I informed the dive supervisor of my dilemma over the communicator. His instructions were unclear due to the fact that he, along with five other divers, were all laughing hysterically. Needless to say, I aborted the dive. I was instructed to make three agonizing in-water decompression stops totaling thirty-five minutes before I could reach the surface to begin my chamber dry decompression. When I arrived at the surface, I was wearing nothing but my brass helmet. As I climbed out of the water, the medic, with tears of laughter running down his face, handed me a tube of cream and told me to rub it on my butt as soon as I got in the chamber.

The cream put the fire out, but I couldn't poop for two days because my butt was swollen shut.

So, next time you're having a bad day at work, think about how much worse it would be if you had a jellyfish shoved up your butt. Now repeat to yourself, "I love my job, I love my job."

Re: Having a bad day at work????

Pointer, this one has circulated through the board several times, but it is still a good one.

I know that story, but after today, a jelly fish clingon would be better.

Called this morning at 5am, 4 degrees F. One of our resturants says their walkin freezer is at 35 degrees. This is the highest priority of my job.

I just got my service van back the night before. It started up just fine. Switched all my tools from my personal truck to the service van. Get up to the store, then go up on the roof where the condenser is located. Checked everything out control wise and is okay. Put my amp loc on the wires going to the compressor. Oh no, the dang 300# compressor is locked up. :( There was a slight breeze just enough to make it real miserable. Working with gloves and real small parts doesn't work too good.

Everything today that could go wrong did. They gave me the wrong filter/dryer (even after I took the old ones in with me), left my guages in my van, the new crankcase heater bad (had to make a trip back to the supplier), the kit with the service valve usually has a valve core tool included but didn't have it (had to run to the shop to get one), picked up speeding (first ticket in 8 years), controls on the bucket truck was frozen, the freon didn't want to pump out because it was so cold, so cold it was a pain soldering the suction filter in, no help to set the 300lb compressor in place (now my back is hurting) and other stupid little things.

I spent 9 hours outside. At least by noon it warmed up to 15. After 5 years of dreading a winter compressor change, it finally happened and it was not fun.

The fingers that got frost bite from the freon spill last summer has lost their feeling. Now that I'm starting to thaw out my fingers are starting to hurt since the feeling is coming back.

DUH, what a frigid day....Brrrrrrrr :(

tell em to put the stuff from the freezer outside, and when it gets to 31 degrees, you'll fix their freezer :)

Re: Having a bad day at work????

Most of our stores have a 2'x2' delivery door that goes from the freezer to outside. However this is the worst designed store I have ever seen. The delivery door empties into the bulk coke storage/watertank storage room. So I can't open up the door to let outside air in. If I do this the water will freeze up. In the other stores I put a box fan in the delivery door to keep things frozen.

Can't put the stuff outside next to the building, because the drive thru lane is next to it. That was a draw back in trying to get the bucket truck close enough to get up over the roof. Finally they gave me the okay to park in front of the store. Needless to say that there are some nice tire ruts in the landscaping in the very front of the store.

Then when I was done, I couldn't get the truck out for about a half hour because the traffic was lined up clear around the building.

I love the pay, I hate the job that goes with it. I wish they would hire me an assistant. My other assistant retired 2 years ago. They said I could handle it. Yeah Right, just a lot more stress. Just hanging in there until my wife becomes an RN. Then I will become my own boss. It will be less stress.

SS MAYFLOAT
I was just joking about putting the stuff outside but in the weather conditions you live in I guess it is really a option. (to put a box fan in the a outside door) wow! I have some friends who moved to MI and I thought they were just pulling my chain when they said that in Oct they take the boat out of the water and pull the dock out also!
I'm so used to our mild winters out here on the west coast! It actually got down to 12 deg F this year for a couple days and we thought it was ruff  On the bright side I pulled out a heavy leather 3/4 length coat I hadn't worn since being in Korea during the winter of 83 :)
