So I have a 1998 Mariah jubilee 214 I put a new motor in it I went from a mercruiser 5.7 to a mercruiser 5.0 the 5.7 had a crack which was the reasoning for motor replacement so I have a small issue I hope so last summer the boat ran awesome never had a issue shifting until the very last time we took it out we had right at the max amount of people the boat will hold going out it kinda acted like it didn’t wanna go into gear but it finally did coming back when I was going to load it up I didn’t have forward or reverse it just kinda made a chatter noise when I tried to put it into gear soI stopped trying and just swam it onto the trailer so once I got it home I messed with it I adjusted it all the way in And it didn’t wanna grab forward But I could put on the shift on the motor and it would go into gear forward and reverse I adjusted it all the way back out and nothing the cable is the original cable could it be stretched maybe because all the way in it tried to go into gear any help is much appreciated thank you and have a great day

Hmm

I suggest you verify the cable is moving your shift dog on the outdrive while you have it on the wagon.

WITH THE ENGINE OFF.

1) Forward will align straight forwards and reverse will be at an angle.

2) When in gear your prop should ratchet in one direction and not rotate in the other direction // these directions reverse between forward and reverse.

If that checks out -- it may be a coupler issue

The experts may have more ideas.

You mention what motor but the issue is with the drive. Is it an alpha or bravo?
I'm assuming alpha, the lower shift cable will wear on the inside, so there can be quite a bit of slop develop over time and needs replacing.

Check out https://boatinfo.no/lib/library.html# for manual 14 and how to adjust

There’s an excellent video on shift cable adjustment on YouTube that one of the moderators posted, assuming you’ve got an alpha drive. The first thing you should do is get the shift cables adjusted properly according to the video or service manual if you prefer. Some of the adjustment specs are very tight. I just adjusted mine as per the video on Sunday. Took about 20 minutes. I’m right on the edge and will likely have to replace the lower cable on the next go round.

yes, cables can and do stretch.

Very sorry I meant to say yes it is an alpha drive and thank you guys for the comments when we got it all put together and running we had to start adjusting And have had to adjust alittle each year have had the boat for 3 years now and it just now got to the point I had to adjust it all the out I’m hoping it’s just stretched
