I just purchased a new 20' Bentley Pontoon boat. I am having trouble with the motor(Merc. 2 stroke 50). It revs up sometimes while running up or down river but it goes no where. It almost looks like the motor is mounted to high on the transom and its starving itself of water, but the dealer says I am crazy. Anyone experience similar problem and what fixed it? Thanks so much

I should tell you I am new to boating so I dont know what that means. Prop seems to be fine, not loose or anything like that. It does not do it all the time and if I have people sitting in the back of the boat, it does not seem to do it. No people or people more up front and it happens

well inside of the prop there is a bushing that slips if you hit something hard to try and save your gears and shafts inside of your motor. i have also seen brand new ones slip right out of the box. if it only does this when everyone is in the bow of the boat it sounds like the motor is a little high, does your boat have a jack plate on it?

Tell the dealer the prop is ventilating. That means it is sucking air when you have people up front. That alone is not uncommon and you need to understand the dynamics of a pontoon. Stand at the side and look at the pontoons. At the front they narrow to a point correct? When you put people up there with nobody in back, the font squats down in the water just like your car would if put some people on the hood. This raises the back end of the toon and prop can ventilate. The front of a pontoon cannot support the same weight that the rear would support because of the shape of the tubes. You must have the load balanced to avoid this. Put people in the middle and in the back, or the heavier folks in the middle and kids up front or split them between front and rear. A spun hub means the rubber cushion that separates the hub of the prop from the blade area has lost its bond and the hub is spinning inside the prop. You cannot test this by hand -- besides, I doubt thats the problem. If the engine can be lowered, lower it fully on its mounting. MAKE the dealer do it.

Thanks for the comments and help. I thought it could be weight distribution problem, but if I take the boat out alone it does it to. I am taking back to dealer tommorrow, its only a month old. They can check the hub while its there and/or lower the motor on the transom if it needs it. Thanks again!!!
