Having trouble removing SX-M gimbal bearing seal

I have been using a slide hammer puller with both the three jaw attachment, plus the single hook/ledge style attachment. Having no success. Tried using a long, sharp screwdriver to cut into the seal, no luck. Any suggestions?

When I use the puller it feels like I am hooked on a solid piece of metal. Perhaps the attachment is slightly too far inside? I am thinking that the original seal is glued in, but there is no hint of movement. I also cut into the inside of the seal with a dremel tool, thinking that might weaken the seal.

Any suggestions welcome.

The gray colored ring with four equally spaced circle imprints should be the seal itself. The size exactly matches the new part, VP 3852272. However I see not seam or gap between it and the area that the bearing sits against.

I just went through the same cenerio on my dps-b. Slide hammer did little to remove it. I cut two slits at 4o'clock and 7 o'clock with a Milwaukee mini sawzall with a fine metal cut blade. It was tough not to let the blade bottom out and bounce around, but patience prevailed. After making the two cuts I forced a screwdriver between the two slits, tapping with a hammer, and managed to collapse the steel ring enough to pull it out. It was the first time the seal was replaced and I could see that it was put in dry. I installed the new seal with the tool I purchased on Iboats. FYI--some say that the seal is not that important and is just a precaution from heavy water intrusion from the bellows area in case of the bellows failure underway. Good luck and remember the area around the seal is aluminum.

Larson260,

Thanks for the help. I was beginning to think I was doing something completely wrong. I will make a second slot with the dremel and try again.

The new seal has a rubber coating. Did you put any sealant on the new seal?

After further work I realized that the VP 3852272 is the wrong seal. My seal is much smaller, and I have ground into the aluminum casting. So now I am looking for a used transom shield.

I should have directly looked up the part, rather than trusting online sellers. Actual seal is # 3852548.
