Does anyone have one?

If anyone has one I would like to hear your expiriences.

I just picked one up for myself (HD Player) and the picture quality is absolutely astonishing. I mean every single whisker and pock mark on someones face is evident. I watched it side by side with a DVD playing on an upconvert player though HDMI and there is a very noticeable difference.

It took awhile to decide between HD and Blu Ray, but the HD seems to be seeing a lot more, especially with Xbox 360 coming out with a player. 1080p from the Blu Ray is nice, but the added cost of the discs is bothersome.

Re: HD DVD Player vs Blu Ray

At the recent CES it was said the adult industry is backing HD-DVD

We allready have HD movies on demand which i feel is were its going with things like sameday release on the Big and Small screen

And look at a movie like Fantastic Four it looks GREAT on a standard DVD player upconverting though HDMI

And then you get a Starwars movie which was filmed digitally and it looks average at best

Re: HD DVD Player vs Blu Ray

I am building a new house with a theater room, does anyone have a feel where the market is going IE: HD vs Blue Ray?

I will be spending about 20 K on something and I don't know which to go to.

Any help would be wonderful.

Ask that question here, a great consumer electronics site.
http://avsforum.com/

I am a member there, and will say this.....there is a wealth of information on that site, but 85% of the time you get ridiculed for asking a question they feel has been asked a hundred times. Also the way their fora are divided it makes it difficult to get a good synopsis of Blu Ray vs HD. They give both technoogies their own fora, and the people that frequent them are usually pretty bias.......its like merc vs Evinrude here. Nonetheless if you can sift through all that you can get a ot of good answers from that place.

Yesterday at work I got curious and started looking at our sales records. HD is getting sold at a much higher rate, which I assume is based on its price point.

If I were spending 20k on a Home Theatre room, I would probably wait until the 2nd generation LG combo player comes out (granted 1st gen has just started). The 1st gen will no doubt be chalked full of bugs and quirks. That would give you the versatiity of buying whatever movies you want (since many only support one format), and also the gaurantee of playing whatever format becomes dominant. (athough I doubt we will see anything for sure anytime soon). At $1200 the price point is only slightly more than a stand alone Blu Ray. Both formats use the same laser, just a different aperature in the lens. That is because of the "ridges' that store the actual data. The Blu Ray ridges are 6x smaller than the HD discs........requires a protective film...........hence the larger price tag for the movies. Currently Blu Ray is also capable of storing much more information. (200G). Surprisingly not many PS3's are being sold, especialy compared to the 360 HD payer let alone the gaming console. To me this is huge......Blue Ray seemingly had a huge advantage being backed by Sony......being that they own the rights to so many movies themselves and can make them exclusive to their format. Now with HD being marketed by microsoft I have to think that nearly limitless bank account will add to the HD advantage so to speak. Either way it is all going to be very interesting. Most people I talk to in the business on a day to day basis feel HD right now is in the lead, but who knows if that will continue.

That al being said some people just don't get it. Last night we had a gentleman come in very upset that his Blu Ray player wouldnt support 1080p on his 62" LCD. He wasnt using the right cables and absolutey refused to buy a high qualitly HDMI cable (which you need for that resolution)($150). Granted that is expensive, but this guy has a $1000 DVD player and a $6000 tv..

Well, I think that if you like video games, even in the slightest, buy a PS3 for half the price and your have your blu-ray player, plus a top of the line video game console.
It's an all in one deal

At that price you could buy the PS3 and 360 8).

FWIW we run DirectTV at work, and HD DirectTV movies are not even close to the Blu Ray or HD players..........at least from what I have seen. This includes watching the same movie.

I wonder if your sales figures may be skewed by those folks that bought PS3 rather than Blu Ray player. That's what my son did. He didn't care that much about PS3 but wanted Blu Ray.

From people I have talked to when they are buying one, the case is generally the opposite of your sons. Most of these kids buying the thing dont have an HD tv and could care less about the Blue Ray. That being said I have seen people buy it strictly as a Blue Ray player too.

In terms of sales I was strictly referencing DVD sales. Although the nationa sales numbers are quite interesting.

Blue Ray stand alone player 25,000 units
PS3 400,000 units

HD stand alone 125,000 units
HD xbox 360 150,000 + units.

It would be incrediby interesting to see how many of those PS3's are being used to play Blue Ray movies. Based on what I have seen probably not too many at least in the area I live. Now consider that there were 10.4 million 360's sold at most recent count at the end of 06'. That is a lot of systems that for $175 you can add an HD Player to. That is a huge bargain. It will be neat to see how this pans out..............especially if 360 gets an HDMI interface.
