My grandfauther has two house's, one in Mass and another in Maine, he has always has a 3ed car up in Maine run around in. For years it was a 1984 Mercury station wagon. It had some rot but it ran good and was always taken care of. Well, one day about three years ago he just junked it, he said that it was because the gas tank let go. At the time no one really thought much of it, but it was alittle too nice to junk, I thought.

After that my dad gave him a 1989 Dodge 250 power ram. It was a great truck, nothing the matter with it, everything worked. He had it for the last two years.

Today is his 75th birthday. We where at his house tonight. When we first walked in he pulled my dad and I aside. He told us "I sent the truck to the bone yard" My dad said "Don't tell me that!" First thing out of my mouth was "what happend to it" he then told us that it would not start in park any more, only in nutral, and thats why he junked it. The guy at the junk yard gave his 600bucks for it.

The truck really was nice, everything worked on the thing  . I have said in the past that I want it when he's done with it, it seems very strange that he'd just junk it with out talking to my dad or I about it first, but he did.

I'm in shock, this is the 2ed time he has junked a good car, he dident even take anything off it, it has a tool box, a gun rack, and a custom horn,,,,,,all gone. It was kind of sad :(

Maybe he wants something smaller now that he's getting older,,,but c'mom. :(

Re: He junked a good truck!!!!

Some people look at a vehicle and see that it is a sum of many parts. When that sum of many parts breaks down, these people understand that by replacing the faulty part, the vehicle is once again operational. Other people look at a vehicle and see a mysterious object that gets them around, and when it breaks down, it is no longer usefull or worth the effort to have it repaired. These people think that every malfuntion will cost hundreds or even thousands to repair, and will get rid of the vehicle if it is old enough to not have much monetary value. I love these sort of people because I get great deals from them..... :D

He's not like that. He does most of the work on his cars/trucks/boats himself. . . . . .maybe he just did not like the truck.

It must have made a junkmans day!

Ryant is it possible he smashed it up a bit. You know a 75 yr old man might be to proud to admit something like that

Re: He junked a good truck!!!!

tylerin,
Funny you said that, my dad told me he thinks that may have happend.

He has been known for cracking up cars and not telling anyone about it untill years later. If that happend, he's doing a real good job at hiding it. I talked to his wife about it (my 52y/o step grandmouther) and she said that if he did smash it up, he is not telling her. I know she would never lie to me, so maybe he did.

Yea she is. My step grandmouther is 52 and my grandfauther is 75, and they could not be happyer together.

Ray,
When your aunt gets rid of the XR7 let me know, my dad has been looking for one for about a year now. It was his first car and he'd like to get another one. Its on a back burner right now, but if one came down the line I know he'd be very intersted.

I think the reason my grandfauther dident offer it to us is because I won't be able to drive for almost two whole years, and he thinks we have to many cars as it is. I thought it was funny when he said, "The man at the junkyard was so nice, he gave me 600bucks and even drove me home"

You are a good boy, you do excellent work, I dont mind, honestly.

Needless to say, the devils hooted and hollered, and shotgunned the angel right off'n de shoulder, and I found all sorts of work to do there, cleaned out the garage, attic, basement, windows, lol, spend a few hours slaving away and leave with my pockets sagging with silver dollars

I loved hearing about the old days, she remembered the turn of the century quite clearly

at the end of the summer, having made a load of money off of her, she said, young man! you left the garage a mess! Its as clean as an operating room in there!!! someone must have broke in or something

there on the floor was a coffee can

filled with silver dollars

(mind you, she paid me well all summer long)

thats a bonus for doing good work

School began, I went back a few weeks later to clean her garden out for her ... and strangers were there

Oh, she died, she had cancer, didnt you know?

She told me was sick with old lady disease

I really got to stop taking these trips down memory lane

:(

Re: He junked a good truck!!!!

CastawayRay,

your story remindes me of my youth. A lady down the street I used to mow for was ILL. (I didnt know that @ the time) But anyway, I would mow her yard for whatever she could afford that week. I never questioned or even asked for payment. I knew enough to respect my elders @ that age. And loved to help. Once she passed. (I was sad for quite sometime.) All the storys she told.. She was quite a woman. Amazing what she had been though. I knew some of her family though the visits of mowing and found out that they were trying to just get everything out of her that they could. She had a some old year caddy. Nice looking car. allways garaged. no miles on it. I guess her grandson got it and just trashed it. He was just a punk kid. But its just sad to see something like that.
