Tony,

I used new GM head bolts with sealer.

Merc manual says: 3. Coat threads of head bolts with Quicksilver Perfect Seal and install finger-tight.

I am sure there are RTV sealants that can be used with no problems.

I would use Permatex thread sealer with teflon. I would not use RTV for sealing threads.

Have a great day,

Rob.

I was always told/taught that you never use RTV anywhere near a plain bearing or small oil passages. The belief was that small bits could get loose and block passages, like cam bearing, lifters, rods, crank journals, etc. Same with teflon tape.

I'd use a sealant designed for threads, not caulking a window frame.

Besides, I'd want to be real careful about what I put on threads that have to be torqued. If you get a hydraulic lock with the goop, its going to be impossible to get a valid torque reading. (I don't remember if there is drainage at the bottom of the threads for a headbolt on a Chevy V-8 to prevent a lock).

Later,

What about Indian Head shelac?

Use Sillycone, or try to refinish it with shelac, or maybe some teflon tape. Have you considered masking tape?

Is there something wrong with using a recommended product? you are trying to seal threads and protect them when you take it apart next year. Things like permatex and perfect seal only cost a few bucks and work. Why reinvent the wheel............... Shelac? ya gotta be kidding.

You went thru this whole process last year, building an engine by which post gets the most votes on every step won't work this year, just like it didn't work last year.

Loctite thread sealent with teflon. The teflon helps to get more accurate torque.
