Why didn't you ask your wife what you did with that manual?

18 to 20 foot pounds in the following sequence.............

13..14
9...10
5.....6
1.....2
4.....3
8.....7
12..11

Because she would remember and I couldn't live that down. Thanks. Did find it eventually. Having one of those weeks where everything I try to fix gets worse. Thanks.

I am ticked. Had machine shop take the rusted broken bolt out. When I torqued them to 18 ft pounds it broke three new new head bolts off. Taking power head off again and maybe I got lucky and there is enough bolt sticking out that I can back them out with a small vice grips. Why would the new bolts snap before the torque wrench clicked?

Joe, I know that you will see this. I am tearing it down again. Hopefully I can get these out. I will get a new head gasket and bolts, torque then down again, but still wondering what the heck is going on.

Never had a factory head bolt break on one of these motors.--Usually the thread would strip out of the aluminum of the block.--Where did you get the new bolts ?

At 18 ft-lbs these bolts do not break.--Look at the values / units on the torque wrench.

Is it the water cover you are replacing ?--1/4" bolts on that or the head gasket with 5/16" bolts ?

I believe you have a bad torque wrench or it's not set right. There is no way a 1/4 or 5/16 bolt would snap at 18 ft/lbs

I could see it being possible that one bolt might have a flaw but not three...something else is wrong. Has to be the torque wrench. Even if the bolts were too long and bottomed out, the wrench would have clicked at 18 lbs before the bolts snapped. I'm curious about something, once the first bolt snapped why did you keep going? The job was ruined after the first one anyway.

Do you still trust that wrench?

I'll bet it's a cheap(i.e. harborfreight) torque wrench. I almost broke a bolt using a cheap wrench. Ended up borrowing a "beam style" wrench from AutoZone. I'm suspect of the clicker wrenches(cheap ones anyways).

Crafstman torque wrench and bolts were ordered by my local dealer.Took it apart today and only one had broken but the threads were stretched on two other. New head gasket and bolts ordered again. Water has to be coming in from the exhaust side so ordering those three gaskets too. I have to assume that there was a batch of faulty bolts that got shipped. I'm taking them to my dealer who is a good friend of mine and he is going to see if there has been any problem that Bombardier knows about.
