Can the head bolts take some thread treatment?
I'm thinking red locktite - or even that shellac stuff they used in the 50's.

I chased the threads with a tap and die.

OR - do I put em in bare?

Id never do red locktite, that stuffs made to make parts never come apart.
I put a very thin layer of engine oil on mine. Retrque after motor has cooled down after initial start up

Use OMC gasket sealing compound on the threads. Oil can cause you to overtorque, snapping off them old bolts! As stated, be sure to re torque AFTER heating her up a couple times.

Also as important, tighten in a spiral fashion, from the center bolt outwards. Also, start with half torque value, then a round at 3/4, then the final torque value for equal torque. Dress the head before reinstalling. Don't thing I have EVER found one that didn't need it.

And i like this amphibious landing craft, i took the photo of it at the museum near omaha beach.
The pillboxes the nazi used there were definitely too freaky to add as a photo
