Engine has been quitting at low speed and missing. Found water in #1 cylinder. I am guessing that it's a bad head gasket. I can't find a mechanic who has the time to do it. How difficult is it to do yourself? What else should I be looking for when the heads are off?

Thanks

It is quite easy to change the head gasket on your engine. Just remove the bolts..place the new one in and reinstall the bolts..tighten cross patern from middle of the head out.

Also check for damage to the piston and cyl.

TMD

I changed the head gasket on my 150 merc and it wasn't to bad, the biggest problem was getting the old gasket material off. Make sure you get all the old off. They do sell a tool for a compresser that would save a bunch of time. I'm not sure on the expense. Also a manual is very handy when tightening your bolts, there is a sequence and torque recomendation. Mine were torqued at 30. Torque wrench not to expensive. Put the gasket on dry. Also when the heads are off look good in each cylinder for scoring. Good luck and let us know how it went.
CU
