Will a blown head gasket cause overheating ? What are the tourch spec's for the head bolts on a 1990 60hp Johnson. Is replacing the head gasket a easy job ? Thanks
18 -20 ft lbs.Fairly straight forward process. Can a bad head gasket cause overheating?I think more that overheating caused the bad head gasket.Torque sequence should be embossed on the head cover.
Yes...a blown head gasket will cause it to over heat...and yes an overheat will cause a head gasket to blow.

Check your Waterpump as well as check your head gasket.

TMD
18-20 Roger that
1990 60hp Johnson VRO
Just replaced water pump (works good) replaced T-stat (looks alot different) upgraded tell tale and heat sensor. Used heat stick,no 163 degree to be found. I used a 150 heat stick, and melted in back of t-stat housing 175 did not Overheating. Using muffs at idle ???? Thanks
150 at idle on hose is kind of right there in the acceptable window. If a 175 doesn't melt you're probably good to go.Just insure that your overheat sensor is working.Take the 175 degree temp stik along with you on your first water test and meanwhile keep looking for a 163 or a temp gun.
You could check it off the engine in a pot of controlled temp water using a meat thermometer as a guage and using an ohm meter accross the leads until continuity is present.Trouble is ,I don't know exactly what temp the sensor is designed to trigger at.I'll bet MarineDoctor or Joe Reeves does.If your temp sensor is new,I'm sure its reliable.
Thanks, I found the 163 stick, has to be ordered from Oklahoma, should have in a week. My VRO is at DFI being rebuilt. I'm sure I will have more questions upon it's return. Thanks again
Tan lead sensor closes at 203 degreees.
Tan/red lead sensor closes at 180 degrees.
Tan/blue lead sensor closes at 240 degrees.
Tan/green lead sensor closes at 227 degrees.
Give consideration to dumping that VRO. i know it's been said before but I have little faith in the saries at least before Bombadire came aboard.
Perhaps all the bugs have been sorted out but from local experience I would give serious consideration to loosing this function and just mixing fuel at 50:01.
Ross
