Hey all, I have noticed that the head gasket for my 1958 Johnson 7? is a hard to find item. Apparently a previous owner found that to be true also, since they used some black "Squeeze A Gasket" in place of one.

2 questions:

a) where do I find a new head gasket?

b) how do I clean the black, rock hard "Squeeze A Gasket" off the head and external block? It is gooped all over the periphery of the head & block near the head; I want the stuff gone.

I am aiming to do a complete restoration of this little jewel, but I also want it to be a runner (it runs o.k. now).

Thanks!

2? 3? Maybe 10? :D Thanks for the reply Frank. I appreciate it.

Hmm, dealing with the hard mess will be an issue. Perhaps some form of media blasting, chemical stripping or olde fashioned elbow grease will be required. I am still open to suggestions or experiences.

I would use a gasket scraper and a small hammer for the really tough areas. or maybe even an angle grinder with a scotch brite pad on it if your real careful. That is mmy preferred method, its much quicker.

It's better to scrap them off. You don't want any grit from media blasting near those cylinders. Scotch brite pads work good too, but be very careful that you dont take any aluminum away with it. They will, trust me. :D I think it's best to scrap them off and use a piece of light grit sand paper to clean up the surfaces, then clean the area with a shop vac.
