I just got finished (I think) installing my new Vortec Heads...

Now I am wondering If I put the gaskets on correct. I thought they would only go no one way!

When I went to put the second one on I noticed they would go on either way!

I installed them with the "raised side" toward the block....any marking went towards the block also.

I am hoping this is correct.....did not see any marks indicating top or anything.

Re: Head Gasket

I know marine is different in a lot of aspects. I have reworked a motor or two in my day, and most head gaskets I've dealt with have the word T O P
embedded in the material between the middle two cylinders when it matters. Easy to miss if your not looking for it, and again, never had the pleasure of pulling a marine head yet....You will probably run into this with the intake gaskets as well. Wish I had a pic....I'm sure someone else will chime in..

This is the gasket I used.....

I am hoping that the pic shows the top of the gasket.

Re: Head Gasket

Thanks Bondo.....was hoping someone would say that. What would happen if they were upside down?

The two sides defintly looked different though. Do they flatten out after installation?

I know it's not the one we were looking for but I don't think it will be too bad.......quench should be about 0.053......I know we were trying for 0.040 but I also read 0.060 was the max.

Now I will install the intake tomorrow.....was waiting to see if I had to do this over again....

Finally stopped raining here.

Tony:

I see that they're stainless steel composites, but are you not concerned with the implications of using automotive head gaskets? Blurb says they're recommended for "stock and mildly modified engines", which doesn't necessarily describe the typical marine operational application.

Re: Head Gasket

The engine is FWC'd so it shouldn't matter.

Hoping to install the intake today....

No other opinions on the orientation of the gasket?

Re: Head Gasket

Quick compression test couldn't hurt. The rain stopped, does this mean you may get this out for a test spin before next spring?? STILL interested in the performance results!!!

Re: Head Gasket

Well, with the spark plugs out you can easily rotate the engine by hand and verify your e-bay 062's don't have any valve/piston issues. A compression test would verify heads and valve are sealed properly. Just a way to double check your hard work and research before any issues or damage may arise. Send the wife to the mall and get that boat out on the water! :p

Re: Head Gasket

Have already turned engine over by hand while adjusting rocker arms and aligning distributor....no problems there.

Guess I could try the compression test after I get everything else connected........wiring, etc...

As far as the wife going to mall.........she's really pretty good about it.....but gotta make sure I don't push it too
far....... :)
