Verify whether the engine has T/stats installed

Re: head temp

You should be able to hold your hand on the top of the head for a few seconds without burning yourself when the motor is up to temperature -- means the temp at the top is about 130 or less. On the face of the head by the plugs, though, it will be hotter. It sounds like the cooling system is working the way it should, although the t-stats might indeed have been removed at some point. If the engine is new to you, it might be a good idea to run it a little bit to see if it runs smoothly throughout its operating range. Overheating is normally the issue needing correction, but in the unlikely event it's running too cold, it probably will not run smoothly or accelerate well.

Re: head temp

130 is that idle or running? motor runs great and the buzzer does not go off. i was unsure of the correct engine temp. sounds as if everything is working as it should. thank you.

Re: head temp

ok i got the book out and found the t/stats. will check them soon. but i'm still wonder about the temp. the book say it should be 120 something to 160 something. where is this being mesured? is this water temp? i read 125 on the engine at the head when running. sound too low or is this right? for engine temp not water temp.

Re: head temp

Classic....what the book is probably referring to is the use of melt sticks. Most manuals say to use a 125degree and 163degree sticks. If the mark on the head melts either stick then something is amiss.

Get a contact thermometer and run the engine at idle. The flat place right behind the top of the head should read 140 to 145 degrees. If the engine dosen't warm up at idle, make sure the t-stats are not stuck open or that they are in place.

Look at the top of each head and you will see a four bolt cover. The t-stats are behind the covers. Careful of the springs in there.

Keep us posted. Thanks.

Re: head temp

You do not have to remove the heads to do the t-stats. You may have to lower the pan at the base of the motor. A pain but will work.

A manual is helpful as the sequence of gaskets, t-stats & o ring (I think) is not obvious.

You may think about running without them but most of the real "experts" here will advise against it.

Solittle....I'm pretty sure that on the 120's and 140's that year the t-stats were at the top of the heads. The V4's below 120 had the nasty little box at the base of the exhaust cover.

Pretty sure at least... ;)
