Re: Headin out in the morning -
Nice boat.
No rods and reels + no fish = no drool
I've always found that announcing a trip before I leave and talking trash is one of the very best ways to jinx myself...
The only thing that Jinx's me is taking pictures of the fish I catch. Someone else can take pictures of me with a fish but if I take a picture myself, more than once, it's been the last fish.
All my rods are G-Loomis except that one Diawa in the rod holder and my Sage Z-Axis 4 piece fly rod which is in a metal rod tube and guarded heavily. I carry the Diawa just incase some one without their own gear wants to fish. As it turned out, there was a kid about 10 years old that came into the Gas Station in Chester, CA. There were a couple of other folks there with boats getting gas and the kid was asking if anybody had a part for his reel. No body did and he was pretty disappointed because the fishing on Lake Almanor was HOT. He was just starting to ride off on his bike and I called him back and gave him the Diawa rod with it's matching Sweepfire 2000B. A million dollars couldn't have bought the smile that came to his face or the feeling that came over me.
So anyway, I never, never travel with my rods in the boat. I stop along the way for breakfast and do my shopping. I'm not leaving several thousand dollars worth of rods hanging out there asking to be borrowed. It took me a long time to be able to afford them and I rarely leave them out of sight and not secured.
So the trip is going nicely. Arrived at Spalding, Ca at noon on Saturday. I unpacked and then made my rounds delivering fresh Cantelope to my friends (tradition) and getting the scoop on the lake. I dropped of the Comptuer and Printer that I donated to the Eagle Lake Guardians and took the fly tying material that I picked up for Val (Val Aubrey eaglelakefishing.net). Val is like a daughter to Jay Fair and has been a guide up here for years. She's the one that the other guides look for on the lake.
Sunday was the first day out. Val fished the east side of the lake and I fished the west. We both did well. The last fish of the morning I had on tailed danced three times and came in right at 3lbs. Over the years I've learned that the fish to keep are the ones that put on the best show. They seem to be heartier and the meat is firm and sweet.
This morning (Monday) - High wind advisory - At 4:30 I could feel the hair on the back of my neck stand up as a small breeze blew in from the southwest. Checked with NOAA and sure enough, there's a Lake wind advisory. I called it at around 5:15am and came in to write this update. No point in trying to get through the narrows at Pelican Point in 6' confused waves that'll take down even the best of the best.
