Is it possible to just buy a used heat exchanger (for the same size motor ) and modify so it cools the block only. I have a new motor sterndrive set up (RWC) so I have heard a full sysytem shoudnt be done without a sep seawater pump.I want to make it a fwc system,,,the kits for my omc motor are like 800 bucks but saw some nice used merc heat exchangers for a couple of hundred bucks I know I can fab. a bracket add some hoses etc should it work? Or do i need to get the kit thats for my engine,,,they seem all the same for the most part didnt know if someone has made there own fwc system before.. thanks

Re: Heat exchanger

There is more to it than just the heat exchanger. You will also need the proper thermostat housing, thermostat, hoses, and brackets to mount the heat exchanger. That is why they sell KITS, not just heat exchangers.
Besides, the used heat exchangers are probably corroded thru or plugged up, which is why they are for sale alone.

Re: Heat exchanger

FYI........if you were able to find all the parts you need it is possible to modify a heat exchanger.

I was able to sweat copper plumbing fittings to modify a set-up I put on an IL6.

Good luck!!
