AQ125A heat exchanger question. The actual exchager itself, which side is the anti-freeze side of the exchange.Does it go thru the inside(tube side)or the outside(shell side)?

When you pull off the end cap & look in, you are looking at the sea water side......So, the shell is the anti-freeze side.....And you can't really see any of it....JK

Thats confusing. KISS. Antifreeze/coolant tubing is surrounded by the cooling water

The engine coolant/anti-freeze is on the shell or out-side.... Asked & answered IMHO....I would be happy to elaborate further if anyone is still confused....JK

Re: ?? heat exchanger??

I'm still confused. I don't have a fresh cooled system, but any cooling system or heat exchanger I have ever seen always has the stuff needing cooling surrounded by the stuff cooling it. Ya mean a boat has the opposite? Guess in a boat it would work......learn something everyday

Well Robby, O.K......I guess that I find the 'Quote' function is sometimes used to make contributors to the forum look stupid.....Even though someone doesn't give the most informed answer, doesn't make it right to belittle them...I think that all of the members in this forum try to help each other the best they can. When I don't give the best answer or leave something out I rely on Bondo, Don S. , Rodbolt et al...to chime in...That said, can I buy you a cold one? :D ....JK

Re: ?? heat exchanger??

The easy way would be to take it to the local radiator shop, and have it boiled/rodded out.... Should not be more than $60. or so.....or pull off the end caps & do the best you can....You should be able to see right through (end to end easily)....JK

It's a 125 Volvo, there are no "End Caps" and it isn't your standard round tube type heat exchanger.
I normally dissasemble the units, then clean the insert (#6) with a 50/50 mixture of Muratic acid and water. Soak it for about 15 minutes and it should clean up fine.
The Muratic acid is nasty stuff, so take the proper precautions.

Re: ?? heat exchanger??

Thanks for the advice.Instead of removing the exchanger,do you think I could blow in compressed air thru the drain hole on the bottom?I thought maybe I could fill the exchager with water and blow everything out the top. Hopefully taking the seaweed wwith the water. In the oil refinery business.
we do that to clear out build up on the cooling water side.Do you think it will work with this?

What the heck, give it a try and find out. I would just be careful not to overpressurize it and blow it up.
Then after you get it cleared, there should be a sea water strainer under the cap. It will keep the heat exchanger from filling up with seaweed.
(Look at my previous post, I edited the picture to show the strainer)

Re: ?? heat exchanger??

Hey Don thanks for the help.I know about the strainer.Funny thing is I had one in but this vegitation we have is less like seaweed and more like some type of underwater furn.By August its real bad.I was thinking of trying to fabricate some heavy grade wire mesh to fit into the strainer cup to help.I had over heating problems.Replaced the impeller, but still I would get a little warmer than before.Looked down in the exchanger and can see seaweed.I'm sure its effecting the cooling.
