I have a 20' Riveara cruiser pontoon boat. The 50 hp johnson that came with the boat isnt running right. Runs great at full throttle, but dies on idle speed. Mechanic hasnt fixed the problem yet, however, I have an older johnson '81 90hp v4 on my bass boat that is getting a new transom installed later this year. How can I install the heavier motor on my pontoon, and adjust the pontoon bouyancy to accomidate the weight? (keel is setting to low in water).....Any help???

Re: Heavier motor on pontoon...

Unless you want to add another log in the center, the only solution is to move weight forward. That might mean longer battery cables, fuel lines, steering and control cables, or a new recliner for the Mother-In-Law. Bigger bow anchors could help too! Toons are great for puttering around but they do have their limitations. Be careful of the extra weight flexing the deck to toon welds on the aft inside of the toons. May have to brace the deck if it sags too much.

I would not do it unless your boat was made to hold 90hp... Look for a plate that says max horsepower and persons.
