heavy engine, porpoising problem

I have a Triton 2070 aluminum boat, it's rated for a 115hp. So I put a 115 Honda on it and it porpoises pretty bad. I haven't tried a hydrofoil, trim tabs, or jack plate (yet...), but I'm concerned about the overall weight of my engine being the problem ( 486lbs ). This boat hull is a heavy hull, weighing well over 1000 lbs, plus it is rated for a 115 engine. Also, my engine hasn't been adjusted for height either, it's set from the dealership as low as possible. Do you think I'm just stuck with this problem due to the weight, or is there hope with the afore mentioned additions and/or adjustments?

Thanks, I'm getting despirate for help !!
Russ

You should be able to adjust the angle at which the engine sits on teh boat (aka the TRIM). I assume you don't have power trim so check where the engine hooks to the boat. There should be several different pins to adjust. Check that out, should help the porpoising.

~Phil

Re: heavy engine, porpoising problem

Hi, the Honda engines ,when measured come out an inch to an inch and a half longer. They need to be set up higher than other engines I have found.. A fin will definitely help getting off the line. I like the Stingray model and the Edge models. This will take care of that extra weight you carrying. Tough to get it totally right long distance but this should help. nevjb

Hey, Welcome aboard :D

Is this your boat??? NICE!!! :D

Surly the new 115 Hondas come with power trim? Make sure you are tucked all the way under to start with.

You need to raise your engine so that the cavitation plate is at least even if not 1" above the bottom, If this dosnt solve the porposing you need a set of Smart Tabs.

Forget the fins, there is no comparison in performance between the two.

Lube Dude has it right.

First: get the cav plate where it should be; second: check the trim ( IN when starting out, trimmed UP when moving along until it porpoises, then back down a little) and
three: Smart Tabs, rather than a hydrofoil....the tabs ( any tabs) lift the boat, not just the engine. A hdyrofoil can put extra strain on the transom.

More and more tabs are going to be sold since the newer engines are heavier than the older ones. RichG
