My brother has a 1990 Regal valenti with a 305 mercruiser with an alpha 1 outdrive. When you start it in neutral it spews BLACK thick smoke and as soon as you put it into gear is disappates within a 30sec - 1min or less time frame.

There doesn't seem to be a connection to engine temp or time of inactivity. Also the engine runs just perfect other than this annoying and somewhat concerning quirk.

Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!!

Black smoke is usually a fuel problem. The carb may be out of adjustment. If it is grayish then it is probably oil related.Charlie

It could be valve seals - ? - when sitting oil
leaks down past valve seals into cylinders,
and burns off when engine is started. You
will see smoke for a few seconds and then
nothing.

One or two spark plugs may foul after a few
hours, change plugs and keep on running.

Re: Heavy smoke at start up

The GM 305's were notorious for oil past the valve guides and thus "blue" smoke on start up. I owned 2 camaros with this problem. Both fixed by the dealer under warranty.

Black smoke on startup is excessive fuel. How many times are you pumping the throttle before start? Remember that fuel is squirted into the carb via the accelerator pump and too much pumping will cause this.
Choke setting may also be incorrect but would cause black smoke all the time while the choke is in operation until the choke shuts off.

I hope this helps.

Jeff
