Re: HEI conversion for Points

The simplest conversion is the one listed here on iboats or availible at NAPA Is a beakerless conversion and they work great, if you go to HEI ck last weeks foram the shift kit is listed on it as pentrox ign.

http://www.pertronix.com/ <br /> Simple fix. Replaces the points. No extra parts needed and it will all be marine because you are not changing anything (Dist, coil, etc) except the stuff under the dist cap. Lots cheaper also. You find them on eBay a lot around $75.00 or you can order from the company for under $100.00

Re: HEI conversion for Points

By HEI do you mean the EST or the old centrifigal advance coil-in-cap set up? <br />If your looking at the older stuff, bad news. I don't think they ever made a marine version of that and the straight 12 volt coil doesnt work with the ESA.<br />Best bet is to convert your marine distributor with the Pertronix set-up or something similar.<br />Do a search here and you can find a whole buncha good info on the change-over

Thats asking for trouble it will not have the proper flame arrester to stop the chance of explosions and would not pass coast guard inspection

Justin@bay <br /> Just go to a local Johnson-Evinrude dealer and have them order the factory electronic ignition conversion kit for your engine. It also includes a new shift assist module and an instruction pamphlet.<br /><br />The points conversion kit is listed in the Parts and Accessories Catalog (Stern Dirive section) that every dealer has shipped annually from the factory.

seahorse,<br /><br />Do you have a price on the kit? Might be good for somebody that doesn't want to fuss with the "diode fix"<br /><br />Justin,<br /><br />laddies gives good advice. I tryed it. Its a tight fit and you have to remove the ESA just to get it in. ESA doesn't work with it. you'll need to rig something up to work as a shift assist. I figured I'd "marineize" it after I got it to work right but never got it work good. Scrapped the project and converted the Mallory. Its a piece of cake and costs about the same as 3 tanks of gas. The HEI ain't worth fussing with and can be dangerous.

Re: HEI conversion for Points

The factory kit is around $200+ lst time I looked. It includes the new style ESA that only "interupts" the ignition for a few seconds in case you have a stiff shift linkag, instead of it staying engaged. It also does away with the "overstroke" switch and wiring, simplifying things.

The Pertronix will cost less cash but you'll have to do more work. Both should work the same when your done.
