Anyone here have any special techniques on installing a heil coil on the lower unit drain plug on a 15 hp johnson. Ive installed several just not on aluminum. I looked for a procedure on here put didnt find anything. Any info will be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Heli-coil question

I would be concerned with water leaking in. Can the hole be welded up and re-tapped? Warpage/distortion might be another issue, however.

Being aluminum won't change anything. Except possibly make it easier. The trick is going to be getting the tap straight. Sorry, I can't give you any advice on that, assuming you don't have access to expensive machinery, like a mill.

Re: Heli-coil question

it can be done but its tricky..the tap has to be very straight it will probably be easier to do it in the tilted up postion or take the unit off completely which ever is comfortable...as mentioned above its no different just easier because it is softer metal...if its stripped already you have pretty much nothing to lose because it has to be fixed...just be careful of water intrusion when you are done...
