hello all johnson boaters,Ive been workin on this 70hp 1979 johnson for the whole year now and having problems with carb issues. Now ive read in the clymers that this carb has had problems with its orifices, idle pick up tube and so on.I know the years are for 83 for orifice and tube but my engine is a 1979 70hp with 55-60 hp carbs on it.with 3 orifices on them.having same problem with mid speed take off.should i remove the intermediate orifice on them.havent checked # on carbs yet, but its the 393196 and 393197 without the (s) that have the wrong orifices.Any help would be awesome, thank you.J Jacobs

I would get a real OMC manual for that, Clymers isn't the greatest.

The correct factory manual will have only your engine with all your engines specs.

Pull the jets(orifice) and run a stranded copper wire through them, pull back strands till it just fits, also run the wire through the passage from the idle to mid jet and blow out, the air in a can for computers works well, don't forget the main in the bottom of the float bowl.

As a tip keep the cover screw with its jet so you don't get them in the wrong place.

why do you have different carbs?

Ethanol and fuel lines
replace all fuel line with Alcohol resistant lines. Ethanol deteriorates, the rubber lines, then they start to sluff off on the inside, going directly to the carbs. Settling to the bottom of the bowl. Contaminating the carbs high speed jets. clean a rebuild carbs, flushing fuel line before connecting to carbs.
