Hello all I just got this Evinrude 88 SPL for free from a friend cranks no start no idea how to work on boats but willing to learn

Hello I'm 17 and wanting to restore this boat motor and If possible the boat but I don't know if it's worth it I got it for free but can't get the motor started I attached some jumper cables to a car battery and the starter solenoid but the starter at first would not engage but now its engaging and spinning but it's spinning slowly and not consistently (like it'll spin good then slow down then spin then slow down when it hits compression) I've tried cleaning spark plugs and going to replace them tomorrow but it was sitting without the cowling for at least a year so I don't know if there is any saving it ask questions if you have them and any advice is very much appreciated I can also take pictures of anything you need.

If water got inside the engine , it needs to come apart for inspection.-----Take starter apart for inspection and ohm test on armature.----Do a compression test using rope on the flywheel.

I'm getting no spark so that probably has something to do with it

If the engine harness is hooked up to the like throttle control would it get spark if I'm jumping the starter?

You would have to turn the key to " on " and safety lanyard clip installed if control has that.
