Hello, ANOTHER Merc serial # question

hello everyone. i am new to the forum but not new to boating and fishing.

i recently bought a used boat. was told the powerhead is a 1989 Merc 135. the serial info on the transom bracket is painted over. I believe from the powerhead down is interchangeable with several powerheads (135,150,175etc).

are there any other casting numbers or ID on the block that I can use to properly identify this powerhead? the serial on the title is lised as a 200hp.

Check on the powerhead for a silver, dollar sized disc like this:

and if they used a spray can to paint over the serial number, hit it with carb cleaner and a rag.

If the paint is not baked on, it should wipe/rinse off with the carb cleaner.

and if all else fails, get some automotive paint stripper, just watch where it goes.
