Hello Experienced Boaters...I'm new here

Hi all. I'm Keith. New Boat Owner. Just happens that the boat I own is one that most of the parts you can't get. I have a 1978 Bayliner Cascade. It's equipped with an older Volvo Penta 130D and a 280 Outdrive. I hope to soon have the Clymer Manual for it (it's on order) and Have downloaded all the manuals from here that I can on this engine. Seems the engine itself is in pretty good shape. Only thing, there is water in the oil and it likes to get hot, Really Hot. I've talked to a few boat shops and they say it could be as simple as a thermostat and a little seepage or it could be as bad as a cracked block. I know nothing about boat motors. Dad taught me everything he knew about Car motors and Tractors, but not boats. Is this worth trying to fix or should I scrap it and get something more reliable? I don't want to run into the ground paying for repairs if it's not worth it.
Sorry for running on...just need to know, is it worth fixing???

How much water in the oil are we talking about? Thimble full or gallons?

Well, when I pull out the dipstick, it looks like creamed coffee. The guy I got the boat from said it had been sitting for a couple of years. And he had that issue when he parked it. Also mentioned the exhaust side was leaking from a seal or plug.

Have you changed the oil and the water came back?
If it came back it's tear down at least the top end time.
Boat engines are the same as cars in most respects, sometime exactly the same engine.

Cool. Thanks for the info Patriot. As I said, it seems the oil has some water in it...but not sure if it keeps coming back. The overheating issue is pretty much seems to be cut and dry, Thermostat, water lines clogged or impeller? Is that what it is called in the water pump? I know in a car it's pretty much the same...but is it that simple with boat engines?

If it's been sittin for a while I would definately change the impeller. A good source of water intrusion in those engines is the oil cooler.

Other reasons for overheating, water neck at the drive corrodes from the inside. pull the hose off for a visual inspection. if it still has the original strainer they are prone to vacuum leaks.
