I live in Wilton Manors, Florida, specifically Jenada Isle. I own a 13 year old BEATER- a 16 foot Larson All-American- powered by a '96 Yamaha C85. That overheats-
I got the whole package on the cheap from my neighbor, Bob Connelly. $1800, includes boat, motor and trailer. The catch: the boat is in average condition, with a speedometer that doesn't work, seat cushions with piping that is broken open, and several mounted side cushions missing.
The real problem, and I knew it when I bought it: the engine overheats.
-First thing I did was pull the sensor and put it in a pan. Sure enough, it fires at the correct temperature. I pulled the thermostat, and then dropped the motor into the water and started it up: guess what: It blows exhaust out the thermostat cover. I changed out the head gasket, and it still does this. I did notice that a section of one barrel was chipped, and had been repaired with Marinetex. I removed the thermostat, and when I ran it at 3500 rpm up on the plane for 30 seconds, it overheated. That was about 5 months ago, and when I did the same thing the other day the overheat horn came on after 15 seconds. When I changed the head gasket, I used a screwdriver very narrow and long to scrape a bunch of crap from the water passages. There was a LOT! I suspect I have a lot more scraping to do.
Anyone else ever had a Yam 85 give this sort of trouble?
