I live in Wilton Manors, Florida, specifically Jenada Isle. I own a 13 year old BEATER- a 16 foot Larson All-American- powered by a '96 Yamaha C85. That overheats-

I got the whole package on the cheap from my neighbor, Bob Connelly. $1800, includes boat, motor and trailer. The catch: the boat is in average condition, with a speedometer that doesn't work, seat cushions with piping that is broken open, and several mounted side cushions missing.

The real problem, and I knew it when I bought it: the engine overheats.

-First thing I did was pull the sensor and put it in a pan. Sure enough, it fires at the correct temperature. I pulled the thermostat, and then dropped the motor into the water and started it up: guess what: It blows exhaust out the thermostat cover. I changed out the head gasket, and it still does this. I did notice that a section of one barrel was chipped, and had been repaired with Marinetex. I removed the thermostat, and when I ran it at 3500 rpm up on the plane for 30 seconds, it overheated. That was about 5 months ago, and when I did the same thing the other day the overheat horn came on after 15 seconds. When I changed the head gasket, I used a screwdriver very narrow and long to scrape a bunch of crap from the water passages. There was a LOT! I suspect I have a lot more scraping to do.

Anyone else ever had a Yam 85 give this sort of trouble?

we have a 1992 85 yammy on a 19 skiff-love the engine, stubborn little sucker, we flush it every use, mix the gas, and it keeps on going; obviously we do a little more than that-change impeller annually, but really it runs well, and while we don't do our own maintenance, from what I've seen of the engine it looks very straightforward.

Welcome to iboats, sounds like typical salt water motor, that has not been flushed regularly.

Welcome to iboats and good luck with the motor, I agree with TD, sounds like a saltwater motor that has not been flushed properly.
