Going to look at a 10 h.p evinrude outboard tomorrow. Haven't seen it yet but the man claims the motor runs good and has as much power as his newer 9.9. I dont know much about the 10 h.p. I mainly wondering if anyone knows much about these motors as far as dependability. It is an evinrude so it ought to be awesome. I am also wondering if anyone has any idea what year they quit making the 10 H.p. because the guy does not know what year model it is. He only wants 200 dollars and if it runs as good as he claims it does i am not worried about getting cheated. Just wanna make sure i will still be able to get my hands on parts to fix it in case of problems in the future.

Look on the stern bracket when you get there, you should find a year posted there. If not, look for the frost plug. It is about the size of a quarter, silver or black if painted, and will have the model number etched into it. Post this number and we will be able to get the year for you. The plug is most likely at the top rear of the motor. even if it is older, there are many avenues for parts, along with the great advice of some of the experts on this forum, and the aid of a manual, you should be ok. laingsoutboards.com

I think Evinrude made the 10Hp from 1956 to 1963.

Re: HELP....10h.p. evinrude outboard

thanks for the info. I actually ran the motor today. it starts easy runs good and idles good. the only problem i have found w/ the motor is on the tiller handle throttle it has a START setting, a SHIFT setting , and FAST. But the if you try and go down to the shift setting area the motor dies. But when you are above the shift setting a little ways the motor idles perfectly and sounds like it is at about the right rpms. I think something is out of adjustment on the throttle. Any ideas on how to fix or where exactly the problem might lie. Its really no big deal just takes some feel to figure out exactly where to put it.

I'm not familiar with the ten horse but I have a 15, 9.9 and a 9.5 and the play in their throttle through the tiller is excessive to say the least. The 15 is the only one running and it doesn't cause me any problems. Enjoy your new motor. Rick.

So, did you buy it or not? If you did, it's too late to suggest checking for the two main weaknesses of the 10hp. Years 1958-63 can't tolerate a lot of running with water in the lower unit. Neither can any other motor, but those years are less forgiving. Also, years up through 1960 have a problem with beating the wrist pins loose in the pistons with high hours use. You can hear it as a definate clakity-clack clatter at slow idle speeds. You can also confirm it with a screwdriver after removing spark plugs. Never cheat on oil on those years!!

The wording on the twist grip is never correct, only a guide, as in "slow is that-a-way". Can't be "fixed".

the marking on the tiller have never been right, just tells you the direction. $200 not bad price for a runner. test it on a boat, to make sure the clutch dog is not slipping.

Re: HELP....10h.p. evinrude outboard

thanks for the input. Checked lower unit for water and there is none. There is also no clacking noise when motor is idling. I also have a 70's model 9.9 and the 10 horse idles and runs as good if not better than the 9.9. I knew that the wording on the tiller handle is mainly just a guide. The thing that had me curious is how far the throttle will go back past where the motor dies. Once the motor is down past idle you still have quite a turn before the throttle quits turning. But this is not a problem as far as the motor operating. I put it on the water yesterday and was surprised at how much speed the old motor got. Runs well and quiet.
