It will be faster, cheaper and easier to sell the pull start outboard and buy one with electric start

It is a family heirloom and fully restored. I know he won't trade it in.

You might try to find a '57 or '58 elec.start parts motor (bad lower unit, perhaps). If you try AOMCI, look for a '57 starter bracket and starter (take a '58 if offered -- not completely sure about the fit of the '58 bracket, so specify you are working on a '57.) For a simple setup, you will also need an outboard solenoid, a starter button, and an exterior electrical box to mount on the transom -- can get this stuff from a boat store or NAPA, along with wiring. Pretty simple once you do one or two (naturally).

Thanks for the tip. Does it have to be a Johnson or would an Evinrude work? I may have access to the same year Evinrude but its a 35 horse...

The only difference between an Evinrude and Johnson may be the color of the starter bracket.. I do not think a 35 hp would be compatible..

Your motor is known as a ---22 cubic inch model------Marketed from 1957 to 1976 .----Marketed as 18 HP / 20 HP / 25 HP.------Starters from all years will work.----Mounting brackets different on early model to mount the hoods.-----Other engine families and HP models will not work.----A doner motor is your best option.
