Help!1966 Merc 1100 Lower unit - can’t change gears

I need help - I am at a loss -
I dropped the lower unit to change the water pump- job went way to easy..... when we installed - the propeller runs reverse as soon as engine starts.

so I dropped the unit - and tried to turn the gear drive around - but I can’t see to get it to change Gears out of Rev into neutral or forward- anything so
i can try to line up the right position-

if anyone could help on ideas on how to change the gear with lower unit dropped- I can send videos or anyone kind enough to do a video chat etc - I’m at a loss now

Update..... I wasn’t turning the selector hard enough - got on it with vice grips - turned CCW till it stopped the cranked it a little further till it click d again and that found neutral- got the reverse cam in the right spot from a photo in an old service manual - reassembled and boom - works

Good job and had I seen this sooner, I would've told you I used Vice Grips to get mine back in neutral, lol.
