Help
I have a 1972 100 hp johnson outboard. boat and motor have worked great last season. yesterday i took it to the lake and when in neutral the boat was in forward not fast but a little ... when i tried reverse it goes forward still.. i took it around the lake and when put at full throttle goes forward but at half the power. now i lost forward and reverse completely but still moves forward when engine is on! which is how i got boat loaded back up... Does anyone know what im dealing with here? simple fix? expensive? I have never had problems before and am still pretty new to boating! so please any and all help will be appreciated...

That is a hydro-electric gearcase, which relies on electric current through a pair of solenoids to shift. There is a switch in the throttle/shifter that does this. The gearcase defaults to forward with no power.
At the switch, Forward is NO voltage at the green or blue wire.
Neutral is 12 V at only the green wire.
Reverse is 12 V at both green and blue wires.

I am no expert by any means, but I had the same thing happen to my boat. Ended up being a piece on the back of the gear shift plate(I have a side mount shifter) that holds the throttle cable in place. It's a round plastic piece that has groves in it for the throttle cable. Well mine broke, so we just super glued it back in place, and Zip tiped it too! :D haven't had a problem since.

Okay so i took apart the throttle/shifter box and found that switch you were talking about. turns out thats my problem when i opened the box that switch was broken in a few pieces and needs to be replaced. would you happen to know where i can get a replacement? I called a boat yard and their asking $350 for one or they said they can bypass that swich and wire it to a toggle switch for $150. what would be best? also there are two white wires going to that switch what are those used for? thanks so much for your help>

Is there a way to bypass the switch with a three way toggle switch and if so how? Thanks

Not recommended that you go the toggle route. Too easy to bump it from forward to neutral or reverse without slowing the motor down. The built in switches are synched to the throttle so that you're only shifting at idle speeds...
