i have a 1972 Johnson that runs absolutely perfect on land with muffs. However when I put it in the water everytime I put it into gear it just kinds of bubbles and dies after 2-3seconds. We have tried adjusting everything and we don't know where to go from here. Its an electronic shift and shifts great on land. Anybody have any guidance for me?

By the way, we have already cleaned the carb. once but its been a couple months.

"Adjusted everything" sort of raises an alarm. I hope you adjusted everything according to the book, and not just started moving stuff to see what happens. Idle RPM is what you should be looking at. That is, AFTER you know for a fact that it is running on all 3 cylinders and none of them is weak. Or getting water in a cylinder---a common weakness on that motor.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but I have a '73 65HP. Is it the head gasket that blows? What lets the water in?
