Hi roadcrew,

Try taking the ignition kill wire off and see if you then have spark. If so, you have a shorted wire or stop switch. If not, you need to do somemore searching, like testing the triggers and power pack.

Chris.................

Re: HELP 1976 9.8 NO SPARK

I just got this from my brother, and excuse me for sounding dumb! but as far as I can tell, there is no kill switch, except the off position on the tiller. There is a spot on the side of the lower case for an actual kill button, but it is blank. What are the triggers? and Iam guessing the powerpack is the same as the switch box(with all the wires coming out of it)I checked for spark at the coil wires and nothing. Thanks for any help,I just want to fish-hopefully without paying big bucks at a repair shop!!!!!!!!!

Re: HELP 1976 9.8 NO SPARK

If the kill switch is missing the orange wire that is supposed to connect to it may be sitting inside the engine and grounding. If that wire is grounded you won't get spark.
Eric

Re: HELP 1976 9.8 NO SPARK

You'll find two wires go to the stop switch in the tiller handle.. One is ground, the other is the 'kill' wire. Ground the kill wire and the spark stops. Do that witht he engine running and the engine stops. Easy. If the kill wire is shorted to ground anywhere, you have no spark. Find that wire and remove it from the power pack/switch box. Is spark present? If yes, you have a short somewhere in that wire, or the stop switch in the tiller is crook. If there is still no spark you have a faulty switch box or trigger. The trigger is one of the coils up under the flywheel (the bit that spins) that 'tells' the switchbox when to, umm, switch (make a spark).

Hope this helps,

Chris..................

Re: HELP 1976 9.8 NO SPARK

ok Cris, I think Iam getting a handle on this. The tiller actually has no wires going to it but, when I turn the tiller, I watched as I turned the tiller, and it in turn, makes a little lever move up under the flywheel, which is conected to what looks to me like a switch-kill switch maybe??? there are also a couple little box looking gagets- these must be the triggers. These must send the spark to the two coils that the plug wires are attached to? thanks for your help! I am learning, but feeling pretty dumb at the same time.I will unhook the kill switch wires and give it a try

The lever under the flywheel that moves is actually the throttle, it controls how much fuel the engine is getting thru the carb.

I see! so how does this thing shut off? I see no wires going to the tiller at all. There is a empty hole where the kill switch should be, but no loose wire, no orange wire.I recently found a very good picture of a motor just like mine. And I see the orange wire in the pic- sitting in boat,it would be on the left side about right at back of flywheel is where it looks like the wire is going. Is this where the kill switch should be?
