I JUST BOUGHT A 1986 BAYLINER W /A MODEL 275 2.4-LITER VOLVO PENTA 4 CYLINDER ENGINES 125 HP. STERN DRIVE
THE LAST OWNER SAID THE GAS WAS IN THE TANK SINCE LAST YEAR AND THAT IT MAY NEED TO BE CHANGED.
I SIPHONED MOST OF THE GAS OUT AND ADDED SOME TO DILUTE WHAT WAS IN THE TANK, I CHANGED THE OIL AND SPARK PLUGS AND WIRES.
IT STARTS FINE AND IDLES PERFECTLY, HOWEVER WHEN I TAKE IT FROM IDLE 1000 RPM’S TO 2000 RPM’S, I CAN COUNT TO 60 AND BY THE TIME I GET TO THE COUNT OF 60 IT HICK UPS AND DROPS DOWN TO 1500 RPM’S BY IT SELF AND 3 SECONDS AFTER THAT IT STALLS UNLESS I FINESSE IT BACK DOWN TO NEUTRAL. I HAVE DONE THIS 4 TIMES IN A ROW, EACH TIME AFTER A STALL OR A THROTTLE DOWN TO NEUTRAL, EACH TIME IT STARTS BACK UP AND IS READY ONCE AGAIN WITH THE SAME RESULTS.
I DID TRY AND IDLE IT UP TO 2500 RPMS WHICH RESULTED IN A MUCH QUICKER STALL TIME 5-10 SECONDS.
I HAVE NOTICED AIR AND FUEL IN THE OLD FUEL LINE LEADING TO THE CARBURETOR, IS THIS NORMAL OR SHOULD ONLY SOLID FUEL WITH NO AIR BE FLOWING TO THE CARBURETOR, COULD THIS BE MY PROBLEM AT HIGHER RPMS?
OR DO YOU THINK IT STEMS FROM THE MIXTURE OF BAD FUEL AND GOOD FUEL OR COULD IT BE SOMETHING ASSOCIATED WITH THE FUEL PUMP OR DISTRIBUTOR.
YOUR THOUGHTS PLEASE!
CB MAZZA
ROSWELL GEORGIA

If the engine doesnt stall at idle let it run for a while to burn all the old gas spray some carb cleaner in it ..Check your fuel lines for leaks ....if it doesnt help rebuild the carb... Its very easy carb to work with ..
hope it helps

Dom

Re: Help! 1986 BAYLINER STALLING

Hello, Sounds like this motor is starving for fuel. You should not have any air in your fuel line when running. If engines could run on air we could tell the oil companies where to go! Have you looked at the price for a gallon of gas lately! Seriously, you need to have no leaks in that fuel line. It cannot be sucking air and fuel. Find out what's causing that and see how she runs. If it still runs funny I would drain out all that stale gas and rebuild the carb. It will probably be gunked up with junk. This will also cause fuel starvation above idle. Good luck!

Re: Help! 1986 BAYLINER STALLING

Thanks for the advice- I will replace the old hose to the carburetor, it’s being pulled on each end for slack, and slightly closing off the openings on each end possibly limiting its ability to draw constant fuel.
Question? Would it run “on trailer” at higher rpm’s “2000” and bog down after 60 seconds of running smooth because of this?

CB,
You Can't Really Test on the trailer.......
There's No Way to induce Load......
You Really Shouldn't Rev the engine much more than 1000/1500rpms in Neutral, or in gear on the trailer......
I HAVE NOTICED AIR AND FUEL IN THE OLD FUEL LINE LEADING TO THE CARBURETOR,
I don't go Near Volvos,
But, the way I read this quote, If you're looking at a Clear, slightly yellow line,
That's Probably the Fuel Pump Vent..... It Should be Full of AIR..... If there's Fuel in it, the pump diaphram is Leaking.....

There's No Doubt in My mind that You have a Fuel Issue..........
It Could be Anything between the Tank,+ the Carb.... Or a combination of All of It......

BTW, I'm Glad you Found the Cap-Lock Button...... ;)

Re: Help! 1986 BAYLINER STALLING

hello
I agree sounds like a clogged fuel draw tube, anti-siphon valve ,craked fuel line between the tank and the pump.could be the pump failing. try running a known good outboard tank directly to the fuel pump intake. if it runs better you know you have a hull problem. if it does not you have an engine problem. its just a matter of eliminating . once you have eliminated everything the problem will be solved.
good luck and keep posting

Re: Help! 1986 BAYLINER STALLING

Thanks for the support; it starting to wear me out. I can only test on the trailer, I will try a test with a separate tank of gas to see if its from contaminated fuel left over in the tank and or a fuel air leak, the air and fuel hose I am referring to is the clear but "very dirty" line from the upper lip of the carb to the gas pump about 12-15" long.
Thanks for the tech, my son and wife about to disown me if were not in the water soon! Will post…

Re: Help! 1986 BAYLINER STALLING

Hello, Try the separate tank setup and let us know how it goes. Bondo is right on the money with the "overflow tube" The tube from the fuel pump to the rim of the carb is not your supply line to the carb. It is an overflow to allow raw fuel somewhere to go if the fuel pump diaphragm tears or splits. If you have liquid in this line you probably have a bad fuel pump. I wouldn't be surprised if your pump is worn and causing all of your problems. You can tee in a small pressure gage where the fuel line from the pump enters the carb. Then read the pressure at idle and see if it remains constant. If you pass that test try taking the line off the carb, stick a hose on the end of that with a clamp, put it in a large can, pull the coil wire off the distributor and ground to the engine block, then have someone crank the motor for about 10-15 seconds while you hold the hose in the can. I don't know exact numbers offhand, but the jar should fill somewhat rapidly if the pump is working OK. DON'T run at high RPM when on the muffs! Little bursts are OK but don't exceed 1500 rpm when testing! Just some ideas to help you narrow it down. Good luck and keep posting your results!

Thanks, I will try and do the test on the pump, as soon as it stops raining here in Georgia.
You guys are good for the soul.
Thanks for the encouragement again.
