The ECUs only get hot when the cooling system gets plugged up.

The injectors had a recall 5 years ago. A dealer can tell you if it has been done, almost every motor was upgraded.

Like any thing used, have the motor checked over completely by a QUALIFIED person as it is 5 years old already. Have them printout the computer history for you,

You always take a chance when buying used, whether it's cars, boats, trucks, etc.

Seahorse, from doing some searching seems like your the pro here. what should i expect to pay to get the motor looked at, at a dealer? I called evinrude with the motor # and they said nothing has been done to the motor.I love this boat but this motor stuff is really scaring me.

Chris

A thorough checkover of a used outboard with a water test should usually run two hours labor for a tech, and you should get a copy of the computer readout.

Make sure you find a tech QUALIFIED in Evinrude direct injected engines.

No matter what you do, buying used is always a crap shoot.

I have another similar question. I have twin 200 Ficht Directs. The port engine quit running, and the ports on th ECU were clogged with corrosion. After unclogging them, the boat ran for about 15 minutes and the port engine suddenly shut down. It was very hot..the ECU, block, flywheel. Etc. When the key is turned on, it runs through it's self test, then all 3 lights light up.... CHECK ENGINE...LOW OIL....HOT. ...and obviously would not start. After cooling down for about an hour, it would start up, and do the same thing all over.

When we hooked the computer up to it to check it, it says COMMUNICATION WITH THE ECU WAS NOT SUCCESFUL...CHECK THE VOLTAGE...ETC... and again, it would not start.

Does this sound like the ECU or the printed circuit board? Pulled the T-stats...they looked fine. Any help would be approeciated.

If you haven't bought it yet...don't.
If you already own it , run it.
Resale value is next to zip, any major problem will render it scrap metal unlike the average carb'd models.

The early Ficht problems were almost totally the V6's. If I didn't already own one, I sure wouldn't buy one unless it was almost free, and then I would have reservations. There were issues involving leaking fuel rails, injector deflector pins, etc. I would try to find out what fixes were recommended by BRP and go from there. As Jonesg has pointed out, resale is in the toilet for those motors.
