Hi All,

I'm new to outboards and am having trouble with a 2001 Mercury 60hp. A few weeks ago I had some trouble on the lake. I'm trying to figure out what's going on and after doing what I can, I'm stuck. The problem is now that it dies when I give it gas (in neutral). If I push on the throttle cam, it will die pretty quickly. If I pump the throttle cam quickly, it will pickup to about 2500 RPMs or so, but won't sustain it. Any higher than that and the engine just dies.

So far, I've replaced the plugs, one of which looked like it possibly had some oil on it and I've replaced the fuel filter which was very dirty. I was hoping this was something simple but I'm not sure what direction to head next. Do I need to start inspecting the carb?

One other piece of information, while it's idling, if I pull the wire on plug 2 or 4, it doesn't effect the engine at all. If I pull the plug on 1 or 3, the RPM drop sharply and/or the engine dies. After replacing the plugs, 1 and 4 appear to be getting darker much faster than 2 and 3. I pulled the (new) plugs out to do a compression test and noticed that 1 was very dark, 4 was slightly dark and 2 and 3 looked like new. I'm not sure if that's relevant or not...

Any guidance would be much appreciated. I'm hoping it's nothing too serious and I'll be able to use the boat this weekend (I may be hoping too much!)

Thanks!
