I have a 67 Johnson 60hp super seahorse. When the plugs are in, even just one, the compression builds up so fast the starter won't turn the motor (I am assuming this is whats happening ). When I remove all the plugs the motor spins fine. New battery and new starter. Replaced the starter because I thought it was just dragging real bad. PLEASE HELP!!!

More fixing stuff that ain't broke. :(

Your problem is almost sure to be in the wiring of the starter circuit. Take all the big wires from the battery to the engine and from the solenoid to the starter off. Check them for weak and swollen spots. Clean all connectors and reinstall.

Let us know what happens.

I have already bypassed the wiring and tested it with jumper cable straight from the battery to the starter motor.

You'd be surprised about how often that doesn't work.

Can't be too much compression. Has to be something else. Could be something binding, but I doubt it. Can you crank it over with a rope?

Did you jump both + and - cables to the starter? If you only jumped the + you haven't proved anything.

The most common place for a bad connection is the ground cable connection to the engine block. If you merely ran a cable from + to the starter you did not bypass this connection.

We have good reasons for recommending a specific procedure. "Yabuts" get you nowhere.

you asked the question, you are getting the best advice there is, for your problem. between, JB, F_R, and myself, you have atleast 150 year combined experience with Johnson/Evinrude motors.

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

Longshot but if your putting the wrong plug in there the piston may be saying hello and stopping the crank dead, that is the only scenerio I can come up with other than wahts already been stated.

Re: Help 67 Johnson 60hp Super Seahorse Compression Problem

Ok, First a great big thanks. I went out to the boat and started checking wires. Every thing looked fine and I was thinking these guys have lost it. Everything not taped up looked great so... I started taking off electrical tape I peeled off all the electrical tape and protective "boot". I found a 2' spot where the wire was completely corroded on the ground cable, I'm mean it was actually falling apart. Never one to do anything halfway, I went and bought new cables and replaced the pos , neg, coil wire, starter wire and battery wire, went ahead and replaced the solenoid also. MOTOR SPINS LIKE CRAZY!

Check the compression have 100 98 97 and 100. Should be good, right?

Checked spark with all plugs removed. On cylinders 1 and 3 it has no spark until just as you let up it sparks twice.
Cylinders 2 and 4 no spark at all.

Where do I go from here. I defer to your expertise and am quite humble to say the least.

I have a 1966 manual. Does your 1967 60 HP have the distributor type ignition?

No, you just asked two questions with one title. The question on the title is solved and the people who solved that one don't have answers for the new one.

Try a new thread for the new problem.
