Hi, have a 1996 15hp gamefisher...on vacation with family, motor started running badly and finally conked out, won't start.
History: when start, no problem (up till this incident), idles fine. in neutral i can full throttle up... revs fine.
Whne I Put into gear, and i turn handle/throttle slowly, it bogs down... and stalls... when i quickly punch the throttle to FULL THROTTLE /WOT, bogs for second then runs fine...if i were to start out slowly and slowly increase throttle speed...it will conk out..so i punch it to full throttle to avoid the conk out. Now it won't start at all... any ideas????

FUEL PUMP PROBLEM????? thx guys

Start with the basic's;

Does it have a good spark using a spark checker? (I don't mean a spark plug either)
Have you checked compression?
Primer bulb for fuel line getting firm after a few pumps?
How old is the gas?
Is the vent open on the fuel tank?
What do the spark plugs look like (black, brown, white, crispy)?
Are the spark plugs wet with fuel when you pull them?
If they are not wet, have you tried spraying a little pre-mixed fuel and oil in the carb to see if it will start?
Do you know if the carb has been rebuilt at any point?
What is the air speed velocity of an unladen Swallow? :D

If memory serves, the sag and go/die symptom is a too lean mixture. Cough and go/die is too rich. Try enriching the air/fuel mix.

Need a vacuum to suck fuel out. Float bowl needle and seat are doing what they're supposed to.

Guess I'm out of the running for the beer. I don't know your engine at all and was just spitting out basics.

You can guess and fiddle around with a dozen different things, or you can check the spark, fuel to the cylinders, and the compression.

Right now, it could be anything from an empty gas tank to a bad crankshaft seal, to a blown head gasket.

Roscoe is dead on: 1st things 1st. You can easily check the fuel by hooking to another tank, with it's own fuel hose/bulb. When's the last time the carbs were cleaned?

Rodgers454 hit the checklist on the spot.

I would throw a little seafoam into gas intake, let marinate overnight then rehook up all fuel ines and fire it up. It might smoke a little or alot!

Same issue on my 9.9 merc seafoam helped it right out. (Also learned to run all the gas out of carb bowl with fuel line off everytime I shut her down as that ethonal crap hates on engines)

Go ahead and send beer...Then we can talk!:D.....Seriously, if there's a drain plug/screw on your carb, remove it to drain dirt/water/debris out of float chamber...with screw out, pump primer bulb to "flush" float chamber. Your carb probably needs to be removed and cleaned!;)
