Help Again. 9.5 driveshaft play problem revisited

In my 9.5 hp Evinrude it takes about half of a rotation (90 degrees) of my driveshaft to turn the prop from forward to reverse and vice versus. I previously said that I had some play in my driveshaft in going from forward to reverse etc. and I was told this was normal; but, I did not mention how much play. I lifted the driveshaft about an inch when removing the impeller on the water pump. I pushed the driveshaft back down and it did turn the prop with the above mentioned play. (I do not know what forward/neutral/reverse setting was originally on the motor when I removed the lower unit.) Is THIS MUCH play normal? I just don't want to screw things up when I start the outboard. I apologize for not being more specific in my earlier post. Many thanks!

Yes, that is completely normal. There are two lugs on the clutch dog that mate up with recesses between two lugs on the gears. The recesses are much wider than the lugs to allow smoother shifting, and also making up the "play" you've noticed...
