hi everyone, i could use some good advice, i've poured a ton of money(over $2000) into this motor over the past year just to get in good running condition. it's been one thing after another. the carbs, then the controls, the lower unit leaking, etc etc. the latest thing is when my mechanic(who is reputable but i'm doubting his knowledge of this motor)took it out of winterization and motor had no spark. he claimed the internal wiring harness was too far rotted and needed replacing. i found a brand new one. then after he replaced it he says he tested on the hose for 20 mins. and the distributor rotor blew apart! i don't know what would would cause this. it looks like an expensive part. we are frustated with this motor. i'm somewhat upset with him and he claims the motor is too old and will just keep having problems. the powerhead and compression is fine. my dilemma is this: i've dumped so much cash into this thing, should i just give up and abandon the whole thing and maybe try to get another older motor(all i can afford>$1000), or do i just replace the rotor and try to get it running good. I'M SO FRUSTATED! and i don't have the knowledge, tools, or time to do any work myself. ALL ADVICE WELCOM PLEASE! thank you all, sea star

I have a car with 270,000 miles on it. It has torn CV boots, a significant oil leak, rusted fenders, and a cracked windshield. It's a really cool car, the motor sings sweet, and I like it a lot. I could fix these things, but no matter how much money I pour into it, it still has 270,000 miles on it. Problems I'm not even aware yet of are lurking that'll eventually be catrastophic in cost. Sometimes it's just better to let it go before it gets out of hand. I'm afraid in your case, you're already there. If you insist on beating the old horse, buy parts motors.

For the two grand you stuck in it already, you could've bought a newer used V-6 135 that would blow that old inline out of the water.

you've either got to get it runnings, to sell as a runner, or part it out. to recoup any money, complete no runners, bring very little money, as shipping is the killer of the deal. get compression reading on the powerhead, and sell it. do a leakdown test on the lower and sell it.
