last week i posted about my 2000 175 johnson starting, idling but not running enough to get on plane unless the bulb is squeezed and then ill get a alarm. I rebuilt the fuel pump thinking that was it but it wasnt. The mechanic has no idea now.I took it to the lake today using a dedicated portable tank and it ran like a champ lots of power like it always has EXCEPT it still has the alarm after about 50 miles hour so i shut it off immediatly and then it starts right back up with no alarm while idling.Whats going on with this thing? Ive paid him $180 labor and he says we will just keep guessing at $90 and hour.Any ideas

Which alarm? I believe your motor has 3. Low oil,no oil and fuel restriction

Disconnect one wire from the vacuum switch when the horn sounds and see if it goes off. If it does you've got a fuel restriction.

Sounds like 2 issues.

1) Fuel delivery issue with original tank : Could be clogged/broken pickup tube, anti-siphon valve, blocked vent, bad gas, water in fuel, air leaks etc...
Runs fine and normally on an external portable tank, so it's your original tank with the issue there.

2) Alarm: Describe the alarm. Is it constant tone? A number of beeps then seconds of pause? If so, how many beeps, how long a pause? Does the tone change pitch with RPM? etc... As much detail about the alarm as you can.

That info will help these guys determine what alarm you're getting and then they'll be able to give you advice on it..

Just a thought.. :D

the alarm is loud and constant but will not sound at idle only at around 45-50 miles per hour right after it gets up on plane within 10 seconds or less. i can shut motor down and start it right up no alarm until back up on plane. how can it be a fuel restriction when using a portable tank and it powers fine.where could there be a fuel restriction if the portable tank is hooked directly to motor

Does the portable tank you are using have quick disconnects? If it has too many restrictions built into it (small hose, primer bulb ends, tank pickup, etc. then you will have same problem as your boat system may have. To prove it is the fuel restrictor alarm unplug the sensor. If the horn goes away for a short run then you are on the right track. Proceed to figure out what is wrong with your fuel system. Start with the anti syphon valve. They are prone to cause restrictions. Go from there towards motor till you find something. Keeping in mind it can be the sensor? You should be seeing the primer bulb collapsing when running during the restriction occurring.

Take your boat home away from the mechanic first, that seems your most pressing problem

Are you using the same fuel line with portable tank? If so check fuel line. Had same issue and it turned out to be inside of fuel line from the tank was breaking down . Ran fine till WOT then would surge and alarm . By the way the fuel line with the issue was only a couple of months old . Hope this helps.

How long have you owned this boat ?----Did this alarm show up suddenly ?----Does it have a water pressure gauge ?
