i have a 1981 50hp evinrude that is about to drive me insane!! the problem that i think im having is the bottom cylinder not getting any fuel and therefore only running on one. the motor will crank up, idle, and rev up fine in nuetral but when you put it into gear and hammer down on the throttle it will run fine on both for about 3-4 seconds and then go back down to running on one and eventually die out but will crank right back up again and we repeat the process. i think its not getting fuel to the bottom cylinder because right after i ran it i pulled the plugs and the bottom one was dry as a bone. it has good compression 120psi on both cylinders. getting good spark to both it's got a new power pack new coils plugs and plug wires as well as a new fuel pump. fuel lines are good and not clogged i cleaned the carbs but a marine mechanic is currently rebuilding them for me. hopefully that solves the problem but if it doesnt does anyone have ideas?? someone help before i end up in the crazy house!!

Sounds like the carburetor rebuild should fix it.

Trouble is, when a motor has been repaired using the shotgun approach, replacing everything in sight, and it still doesn't run----then you ask us to diagnose it from a distance, all we can do is guess.

My guess is that carburetor wasn't getting enough gas, and it only ran long enough to consume what was in the float bowl.

I have the same engine and it does sound like a plugged high speed jet, they are in the bottom of the float bowl and catch anything that gets into the carb.

Hopefully you didn't hurt the engine, if it isn't getting gas it isn't getting oil either.

Get a fuel filter on it, I am running a cheapy Auto Zone inline one and haven't had carb problem since I put it on.

Don't know how mechanical you are but for what you are being charged for a carb rebuild you could get a manual and basic tools and do it yourself, it really isn't hard
