Not much on Johnnyurudes, but the symptoms you describe sound like defective stator.Did the tach quit at the same time the other symptoms surfaced? I would get the manual and a volt/ohmeter, and check it before switching-out expensive components..
But it sure do sound like stator failure.

fishmaster use the search and see this has been hashed out a bunch of times on the same motor including your year. There must be 50 things you can read about fixing the same problems that
70 hp Jonnyrude is famous for!
steve

Why do you think the stator is bad? (A Guess)

What steps did you take to determine that? (Factory Manual Trouble Shooting)

Do you know what the stator does? (Battery Charging System)

I would be more likely to think that fuel starvation is the cause. Have you tried choking the motor right before you try to speed up. Can you get to full throttle by slowly advancing the throttle?

If you are losing one of your cylinders, I would look at the coil output for that cyl.

If I have my slow speed idle jets too lean, my motor will bogg down when trying to speed up. By choking(adding fuel) it will get to full speed.

These engines are prone to bogg down. I had a 1980 Johnson 70 that I never fixed. Finally gave the motor to my brother. If you solve the problem you will have alot of happy Johnson/Evinrude 3 cyl. owners very happy.
