Help: Broken Windshield - How did it happen??

Hi there,

We are lease partners on a boat and received a call today that the windshield (walk-through) was broken upon removing the cover. I know 100% that it was not broken when we put the boat away last Sunday as I closed the window (gently) myself and noticed no cracks.

Any idea how this could happen? See attached photo.

We can find no evidence of impact on the cover or object inside the boat. Could it have just been weak and shattered from heat cycling? The people we are sharing the boat with (who own it) are incredibly nice, so its really terrible that this happened in this way as we know it was fine when we put it away, yet when they opened it up it was broken.

Any help and shared experience on this is much appreciated. Thanks!

I'm not sure how it could have happened, but I think it's pretty obvious that it occurred AFTER it was put away. No marks on the outside part of the cover directly above where the glass was? How about the inside?

Thanks Sean. No marks on the outside, but I didn't check the inside.

I found these links:

so it sounds like this is rare but happens -- anyone else experience this??

Could be. Any damage to other boats in the area though? Simplest explanation is vandals. Occam says it's vandals. Murphy says its spontaneous explosion.

Myself - I'd pick the one that involves paying less money.

heat cycles can do this on safety glass.

The way the glass is just laying on the dash tells me there was not a lot of energy as is someone breaking the glass, it would be more scattered.

I would think heat stress.
