Help! Cant remove rotor and plug wires!

This may seem silly, but I cant manage to remove the rotor or plug wires from the distributor cap in my 1970 Mercury 800 (80 hp) outboard motor. can anyone advise what the trick is to this. I need to replace the brush and spring assembly in the cap, and can't get access to it. Thanks for any help! you guys are great!

the rotor is part of the dist. shaft and the wires have a terminal that threads into the cap if you pull the wires back thru and have them free of the hold downs it seems to help removal

thanks, I was able to remove the coil wire, which unscrews from the cap, and releases from coil with 1/2 turn c/c. That got me the clearance to remove the cap.
