Hi folks;
New to me 1984 Bayliner with a 1990 yamaha 90 HP elec trim/tilt. After charging battery, put it in and tried to tilt motor down. Heard a "whirring" noise from engine area, but no movement of motor. Same thing using switch on throttle handle or rocker switch on motor.
Ant ideas? I am a newby boater, so maybe I am missing something?
Also, motor will not turn over whili in "up" position. Is this normal? Or again, am I doing something wrong?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.......

I do not believe I have ever heard of a motor being tilted having anything to do with the started not operating, you may need to check to see if you have a bad cable or connection somewhere.

On the tilt motor , I would use a volt meter to see if and were you are loosing voltage. Control circuit or the main power circuit for the T&T motor

Re: Help; can't tilt motor......

Hey thanks for the reply; 99yam40;
So now I have something to check this coming weekend. I need to check and see if the battery is putting out enough power to operate the T&T motor and if it is; is there enough voltage getting to the T&T motor. I will need to drop by west marine this week and see if they have the shop manuals for the motor as well as a manual for the boat.
Thanks again for the suggestion.

are you sure you did not have the tilt lock in place keeping the motor from going down?

Ahha......Tilt lock? Where would it be and what would it look like? I stopped by West Marine today and found a manual for the motor (also picked up a new 20' winch strap). I cannot find anything about a tilt lock anywhere in the manual.
The manual is Seloc #1701 for 1984-1996 Yamaha outboards.
Wow, being in WM was like being a kid in a candy store......took a lot of self control to not just buy one of everything............................

That is it I do believe!!!! I followed the link you provided and......I remember seeing those (one on each side of bracket). They looked like they were holding something up!! Like I said, I am a newby to boats and outboards!! I waited for my manual and looked there, but it did not say anything about that "tilt support lever" anywhere!!!!
BTW, I have 10 years experience in an automotive machine shop, just have never worked on an outboard before......and did not want to mess up anything by doing the wrong thing....
I do appreciate your input, I do believe you have hit my problem right on the head. I will not have a chance to check it out until sunday, though. I will post and let you know. Thank you again...............
