I have a 1980 evinrude 60HP. It has been working poorly for a month now. The engine turns over and starts with no problem. When I lift my start lever to the start position the engine normally would race but this is intermittant, after a 30-45 second period the engine will come up to the fast idle, normal at start up. When I place start lever down the engine idles. When I put the boat in gear the engine labors and even at WOT I have very reduced power and the engine shudders. With my limited knowledge I have done the basics. I have removed and replaced the plugs, gapping them at .030. I replaced a coil that appeared to be scorched and cracked. Someone suggested to Loctite the ground bolts on the new coil which I did. I changed and got fresh gas. I replaced my fuel hose from the tank. I made sure my tank vent was open. I did notice that when replacing the plugs that a oily residue was present at the internal threads, but the plugs themselves were dry and what looked like normal black carbon deposit. It kills me to take this to a dealer can anybody give some suggestions if these scenarios sound familiar. Unfortunatley the worst part of the problem is it is an intermittant problem. Only a week ago after reaplcing the coil the boat ran great for about a 30 minute run, but the same symptons popped up again the same evening.

almost at wits end

Sean C
S

Sean,
It sounds like you have lost a cylinder. Are you sure all cylinders are firing? Put the muffs on it, crank it and remove one plug wire at a time and see if there is any difference in engine. If you find one that makes no difference then it's not hitting on that cylinder. Or pull the plugs and ground them to the block. Get someone to crank over the motor. You should get a strong blue spark on each cylinder.
