help! clunking/ grinding noise

im new to the forum first post i have a 1979 johnson sea horse 35hp model#35el79a i took it out yesterday first time.just bought the motor.it started just fine ran it at quarter throttle no problems then went full throttle ran fine for 5mins then it started making a clunking sound like once every 30 seconds so i shut it down.then i started the motor again clunking sound got worse every 2 seconds and would not go forward or reverse got it home and draind lower unit and found shavings in oil.i took off the lower unit and pulled the drive shaft and impeller as i look down into the lower the bearings on the bottom are wobblie and move side to side is this normal? also does the drive shaft fit into the fly wheel directly or is there bearings or something up in there.sorry for the long post just trying to give all info i have thank you in advance

Well, obviously you will have to take the lower unit the rest of the way apart to see what destruction has taken place.

The top end of the drive shaft is splined and fits into the mating spline in the bottom end of the crankshaft.

there are bearings in front and rear of lower unit. the top is just splined. Bearings should be tight with very little play.

And while you are in there, might as well replace impeller to!

a little more info.with the motor running it makes the noise in neutral and gets louder in gear and i can stop the prop with my foot and when i release it it starts spinning again but like its slipping

Take the g/c apart as you have some probs inside of it.

It is normal for prop to spin in neutral with engine running.....are you stopping the prop with it in gear?

well a few things come to mind. broke drive shaft, lower unit bad, one way or the other it's gonna have to come off. Did you ever check to see if the hub is bad?

You later stated that you tried this method while it was in gear. Bad gearbox or not, if the gears suddenly decide to catch then it's a good way to lose a foot!!!!!

i always wear steel toes but thats no excuse.point taken

drive shaft good and so is the hub i guess its the obvious gonna go take apart the lower unit wish me luck

does any one know if there is a shear pin in the lower unit of this motor

No drive pin, prop is splined to the prop shaft.

well got it apart ,the horror!!! the drive shaft pinion was all chewed up and bearings were in pieces.every thing else looked fine but the lower unit housing where the drive shaft pinion was is all gouged. what should i do now ,any opinions? should i try to fix it or just get another lower unit. thank you all for your info and knowledge this is a great forum!!!
