It's on a small Johnson o/b I believe. 8 HP if I recall correctly. Plainly enough there is no tension being created, in order to cause it to recoil when pulled. As you can see there is a spring inside of another spring that are used to provide that tension. At the base of the springs in the center of them there is a small hook. When the spool is inserted into and around the springs it grabs this hook at the base. The problem, I am thinking, is that it doesn't seem to connect anywhere at the top of the springs. Yes, no, maybe ???

These last pictures are the view inside the springs as they are mounted on the engine/pull start assembly. The spool however is removable, just to clarify.

If you look at the bottom of the spool, you'll see a slot. That slot fits over that piece of spring in bottom of the recoil spring. You can see it in the last pic.

What you have to do is remove the rope, slip the spool down over the spring, make sure the slot and that piece of spring mate up. Bolt the thing together.

Now the hard part, you have to use a large screw driver. On the top of the assembly is two notches in the top of the shaft. Put the large screw driver there and turn the assembly 16 >17 turns counter clockwise. Use a pair of pliers under the pinion gear to jam the assembly in place and not unwind. Reattach the rope. Pull some tension on the rope and remove the pliers. Should recoil the rope right back up.

Lottsa' luck....these ain't the easiest recoils in the world to do.

EDIT: Maybe you should go to the library and see you can find a Clymers or Seloc manual with this recoil starter in it. Pictures are better than words...... :)

Yea, but they're a whole lot safer than the flat spring steel jobs that can uncoil like a snake! :D

Your spring looks to be broken! The inner and outer are supposed to be attached at the top. Yours does not appear to be...
- Scott
