2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo 4x4 with automatic locks... today the passenger door power lock stopped unlocking the door, it locks just fine, and I can hear the mechanism trying to unlock it, but no go. No difference if I use the key fob remote or the unlock lever on the door.<br /><br />Any thoughts?<br /><br />Thanks all.

Re: HELP! door lock stopped working

Check wiring for loose connections or corrosion.<br /><br />Should be a blue and a green wire going to the lock.<br />Blue "up/sky" is for unlock.<br />Trace it back under the cowl to the relays.<br />Swap the relays.<br />If the relay is bad, the lock should now unlock, but not lock.<br />If so, replace bad relay.<br /><br />If this is not the problem, take a piece of wire and apply voltage directly to the blue wire, see if the lock operates.<br /><br />Ooops, wrong forum, this info is for a tilt and trim unit that won't go up. <br /><br />Please disregard the above info.<br /><br />Ah, if car repairs were as straight forward as outboard repairs. :) <br /><br />You should be walking around to the passenger door to open it for her anyway. :)

Re: HELP! door lock stopped working

I may have some bad new for you. The Cheerokee has a master control console inside of the driver's door. This one electronic console controls the power windows and power locks as well. For some reason, this thing will fail without warning, and either one of the power features will quit working; unfortunately, the control box must be replaced, and it cannot be repaired. They are either good or bad. There is no in between.<br /><br />I found a used one on the net for $150 dollars. A new one is well over $300 dollars. Easy plug- in repair, but a little costly.

Well, that's not good news... is Roscoe kidding? I would walk around and open the door... but it's locked :( <br /><br />Thank you TD_Maker, any idea how to test the master control? I can hear it trying to work, and if I touch the door lock I can feel it tense up when it is trying to work.

Re: HELP! door lock stopped working

Yes I was kidding, read my post more carefully. It diagnoses a faulty tilt and trim on a boat.<br /><br /><br />"" I would walk around and open the door... but it's locked ""<br /><br />What? No key to unlock it with? Or no keyhole?<br /><br />But master control module may be working properly, and the problem could be in a loose connection or the solenoid/actuator in the door.

you might want to check to see if the rods that connect to the actuator did not break away from the plastic clip to the latch itself this is very common ,,,,,,,,,,,

Wait!!! Didn't you say...<br /><br />"No difference if I use the key fob remote or the unlock lever on the door."<br /><br />Unlock lever too? Sounds like it's mechanically jammed......

Re: HELP! door lock stopped working

if we were discussing a gm product i would say the actuator is weak, as you can hear it function, the electronic circuits are probably working correctly. unlock is a push activity, lock is a pull activity. push is harder especially if dirt or moisture has found it's way into the door. remove door panel, while activating the solenoid to unlock, give it a little help and see if it will unlock. a can of wd40 is a good choice before the parts store........... but then you could just roll window down and let her crawl out, but i didn't say that

Thank you, needs clarification.... no difference if I use the Key Fob Remote or the automatic door lock button (it's actually a double throw switch that returns to center), I CAN manually slide the actual lock lever and open the door.

Re: HELP! door lock stopped working

Actuator must be the motor.... as for dirt, I have been all over dirt roads over the last two weeks, I'm choking in the fine silty dirt that gets kicked up.<br /><br />I will pull the door panel (just yank it???) and do as you recommend.

Re: HELP! door lock stopped working

There may be a few screws in the arm rest you need to take out first. Be gentle when you pull the door panel off - you don't want to break it. There are plastic pegs with spines on them that attach the panel to the door. They break/get lost easily but are cheap to replace. A long flat head screwdriver will help you pry it off. Once you get it started, it'll be pretty easy. I usually start from the bottom and work my way up.<br /><br />Once you get the panel off, there will probably be a clear plastic sheet covering everything you want to get to. Don't cut that - you should be able to peal it off from around the edges. Make sure you put that back on when you're done.

Re: HELP! door lock stopped working

Hummm nice when you give us ALL the info, you will have to pull the panel, make sure you have all screws off before you start prying,by arm rest, map pocket inside, bottom right cornor of panel maybe left to,fast cornering strap or handle[behind little plastic pop outs],window crank if not power window,if it is be cafefull when you pull the panel off, pull enough to disconnect the switch at the connector in wiring, when it's off check all your linkage and hope that's the problem.Faster way taking the panel off is the chainsaw :p :D :D
